Q. Can a resident who makes a cash contribution to our township's recreation program receive a tax deduction on his or her individual income tax return?

A. Yes, contributions to a township are deductible on an individual's personal income tax. if the contributions are used for a "public purpose." The amount deductible is subject to certain limitations based on an individual's adjusted gross income. Township officials will not give tax advice, but instead will refer you to the IRS Publication 526 for guidance. Information is available at www.irs.gov.
